Wild-Water Racing Update

The 1998/1999 domestic season has enjoyed somewhat varied water levels, with good levels for the Finn and Boyne, reasonable levels for the Mourne and Avonmore, while the Owenkillew was a bit boney. However, the racing has been good and a good turnout for most races was evident, with the big attraction being the Avonmore, as a selection event for the National Wild-Water Racing Team, attracting Irish competitors based in the UK. The National Championship this year is turning out to be a close affair, with two wins each for Martin McCarthy (Mourne, Owenkillew) and John Ringwood (Boyne, Avonmore). The final two ranking races are the Aughrim (31st Jan.) and the Inny (28th Feb). The ever-popular Liffey Series will also take place on the weekend of the 20th/21st March. The international season also looks like being a busy one, with the British Champs. on the Tryweryn (at Bala) listed as a selection event, which should guarantee a good number of Irish paddlers competing. Events listed for national team participation include the senior Pre-Worlds in May on the Treignac in France, the junior and senior European Champs. in June at Bovec in Slovenia and the junior Pre-Worlds in July at Stertzing in Italy.
