Race Report

Hardly the race of the year…..more like the race of the decade! Though the river invariably contains long flat stretches, the swollen level of the river significantly lenghtened the wave trains extending from the bottom of each rapid/wier and gave some challenging conditions on the major wiers – Stackallen, the diagonal and the ‘Big A’, with no less than three competitors enjoying some quality stopper time! The presence of the excellent land- and water-based rescue services of the Drogheda Coast Guard gave considerable comfort!

The high water level contributed to fast times and the fastest time of the day was deemed by some commentators to be a record. However, this author remembers racing the river in winter 85/86 when the water was approximately 2 feet higher, with just a (very big !) wave on the bar of the ‘Big A’ and the tree across the ‘S-Bend’ just about at water level. I suspect that a sub 20-min time might have been possible then, but unfortunately these records are not to hand (anyone got them ?).

In spite of the good water levels and the excellent sponsorship of the event by the Newgrange Lodge, numbers were a little disappointing, but it was great to see a number of old faces back to prove that they havn’t lost the knack. In particular, Brendan O’Brien, Brian Nolan and Vinnie Martin turned in very respectable runs. The sponsorship also allowed a generous array of prizes to be awarded, but the coup de grace was surely the (complimentary) magnificent spread put on by Newgrange Lodge. Even the bunch of (perennially ?) hungry canoeists couldn’t demolish the mighty array of soup, sandwiches, cakes, etc and the apfel strudel was to die for !

Many thanks to Brendan Devlin and his team, the Drogheda Coast Guard and the Newgrange Lodge for a thoroughly enjoyable day. Even the characteristic cold easterly wind was absent, with competitors enjoying calm and mild conditions – not a single pair of paddle mitts in sight !

RINGWOOD LODGES RECORD TIME.

The Newgrange Lodge Hostel River Boyne Wild water race was held in flood conditions on Sunday last. Dublin’s John Ringwood was outright winner in a record time of 21 minutes and 25 seconds. This was a full two minutes under the previous best time set a number of years ago. The river was in full spate and provided a challenging event for the competitors. The event was policed by the Drogheda Coast Guard River Rescue Team which ensured safety was top priority on the day.

The prize giving took place in the Newgrange Lodge Hostel, which sponsored the event and provided refreshments to all the participants.
